Three numbers · keep them apart

NICS vs firearm sales

NICS is checks, not sales. That is a fair and public fact. It does not make a check count into a register series, and it does not make either one into search intent.

NICS = checks, not sales

Public FBI NICS totals count background checks initiated. They mix permits, used guns, transfers, multi-gun checks, and denials. A one-to-one map from a check to a new firearm sold is not valid. That argument is correct — and it is about sales measurement, not about search demand.

Index = register new-gun units

The RetailBI Firearm Sales Index (Same-Store Adjusted) is Gearfire’s monthly percent-change in new firearm unit sales from a selected panel of reporting retailers. It is a register series, not a search series, and it is not NICS.

Betsy = search intent + unmet

Betsy Brand Intelligence measures anonymized shopper search intent across GunSearchEngine, GunSearchAgent embeds, and floor sensors — including unmet (zero-hit) demand. It is not a POS system and not a same-store unit-sales index.

Public FBI NICS is backdrop only — never sales, never a live check system. Methodology note: NICS public aggregates.

Ask-side after the backdrop

RetailBI’s intelligence is a byproduct of retail operations software. Betsy’s intelligence is a byproduct of product discovery.
